Objectives

This one-day course offers a conceptual overview of the data warehouse.

All the characteristics and possibilities of data warehousing are treated: definitions, myth and reality, key concepts, implementation and exploitation strategies.

What does datamining mean and what are the possibilities now? Several types of products can be of use (cleaning, loading, extraction, ...). An architecture is essential, so some time will be spent on that.

Main topics

  • Historical background
  • Definitions:

explanation of the key concepts (datamart, DSS, OLAP, MDBMS, ...)

  • Data warehouse infrastructure:

Back end ETT/ETL), Data Store, Front end Tools, Meta Data

  • Logical implementation:

the complete strategy: source data • transformation • loading • extraction • cleaning • maintenance metadata • datamining • ...

  • Designing a data warehouse:

no data warehouse without a well-considered datamodel: ER, Multi Dimensional Modeling, Snowflakes, Stars
