HSM implementation and customisation

This course describes and explains how best to implement, customise and utilise HSM. Startup commands and options are examined in detail, giving practical guidance on performance and availability issues. Customisation of the environment is also covered in some detail. Managing and monitoring HSM are also important areas which require some attention, in order to provide a good service to end users. Another area which is often neglected is disaster backup using HSM. These are both covered, and the course includes the Aggregate Backup facility as well as other alternatives.

On completing this course, attendees will be able to:

  • implement migration and recall & backup/recovery;
  • describe HSM performance issues and tune HSM;
  • issue (and understand) HSM commands;
  • implement disaster backup and recovery;
  • evaluate and implement ABARs;
  • utilise FIXCDS and PATCH commands.

Main topics

  • The HSM strategy and how it fits into the SMS strategy
  • Migration/Recall features
  • Incremental backup and recovery
  • HSM miscellaneous functions
  • Important new facilities
  • HSM exits
  • Coding issues
  • Availability management
  • Tape copy
  • Use of DSS
  • Aggregate Backup & Recovery (ABARS) for disaster recovery
  • HSM command review • Startup & monitoring HSM • HSM structure and flow
  • Analysing data area control blocks and control datasets
