Definition

WebSphere Application Server

The WebSphere product, as marketed by IBM, provides middleware to set up, operate and integrate e-business applications across multiple computing platforms using web technology. IBM has constructed WebSphere using open standards such as the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE), XML and Web services standards.

Importance

Web-based and Java EE applicationdevelopment and application integration: bridging differences in setup, organisation, structure and platform. Aim: to unite, to bridge, to extend.

Hence, we need an interface, a 'middleware'. De WebSphere environment offers us that middleware - besides traditional components suchs as a webserver and an application server, the WebSphere suite also contains a number of crucial additional components. First of all, it offers us a number of add ons allowing for the integration of back-end applications, some of them using (XML based) messaging techniques. Secondly, as a standard Java EE platform, it is perfectly capable of supporting user and developper specific customisations...

ABIS closely followed from the start the technical evolution of the WebSphere platform, both on the z/OS platform, as well as on the distributed platforms: Linux, Windows and UNIX systems. While in the mean time keeping an eye on WebSphere based Java EE application development. Combined with our knowledge of back-end systems and databases, an important added-value.

De technical feartures of the WebSphere platform, together with the technological compentences of the ABIS instructors, have lead us to define the following core competencies.

What is WebSphere - a product, a technology, an infrastructure? And how does WebSphere implement the Java EE architecture? What are the key points for a WebSphere application developper to focuss on - for example during the application deploy process of traditional Java applications?

The WebSphere connector architecture offers the possibility to integrate existing backend applications - for example CICS or IMS-based applications - with newer, web-based environments. The importance of this architecture can not be underestimated. Setup and configuration of a WebSphere server, both on a z/OS platform as well as on distributed platforms, is treated in depth.
