Multidimensional datamodeling

Intended for

Capturing reporting and analysis requirements in a logical BI data model is of importance for those who help realize and validate a Performance Management project from the customer side.

This training is the ideal preparation for the requirements analysis phase. It most probably will allow you to shorten the runtime of this phase.

Background

There are no specific prerequisites for this training. Motivation and some basic notions about Performance Management solutions will do.

Training method

Theoretical explanation alternated with real life examples and practical exercises.

Objectives

Capturing reporting and analysis requirements in a logical BI data model is the fundamental basis for implementing a Performance Management solution.

Capturing reporting and analysis requirements in a logical BI data model is a two-day, instructor-led course that is designed to explain the benefit of multi-dimensional models and that teaches the attendees how to read and how to build such models. The underlying concept will be explained as well as the rules that one has to keep in mind when validating a multi-dimensional model. The ability to correctly read and interpret these star schemas will make the analysis process easier. By understanding the meaning of star schemas you will be able to build them and validate the result of the requirements analysis.

By using a few examples and exercises trainees can turn theory into pratice going through all steps that are required for defining a multi-dimensional model in a business context.

Main topics

Multi-dimensional models bring structure in the information-analysis proces. They are the basis for implementing a Performance Management solution. This process needs to be performed regardless how the data will be presented (scorecards, dashboards, reports or cubes).

  • Why capturing reporting and analysis requirements in a logical BI data model
  • Detect and define Business requirements
  • Define the domains for analysis
  • Define priorities
  • Step by step approach
  • Transaction or Status?
  • Define relevant measures
  • Aggregations
  • Design star schemas
  • Combining different star schemas
