Objectives

At the end of the Oracle DBA 1 course, participants are able to set-up and maintain an Oracle data base server In this follow-up course the emphasis lies on the 'why' of the maintenance tasks and how to improve them. In this course more advanced maintenance topics are treated. Also the improvement of the performance (tuning) is important. This course treats version 8 and 9 of the Oracle data base server.

The participant will be able to:

  • identify the structure of the memory and the processes;
  • distinguish and to define the set-up parameters of the data base;
  • execute evaluation systems by means of concrete techniques;
  • identify the different client/server components and the possible implementations.

Main topics

  • Introduction
  • The Oracle-system • initialisation parameters • structure • set-up • start and end
  • Memory structures:
  • System Global Area (SGA) and elements (library cache, shared pool, buffercache(s), logbuffer): configuration and optimization, use of several buffer caches.
  • Process Global Area (PGA) - sort section
  • Tuning
  • Server Processes: configuration and tuning.
  • Background processes: configuration
  • I/O tuning
  • Efficient use and choice of Oracle blocks
  • STATSPACK: objective, use, implementations
