  • an understanding of the DB2 utilities and service aids that are used in recovery situations;
  • the actions taken by DB2 during normal start-up, operation and shut-down and following an abnormal termination;
  • the need for deferred and conditional restarts, and the effect these will have on the DB2 system & data;
  • how to analyse the need for additional work following a deferred or conditional restart.

Main topics

  • PART 1: Database maintenance & integrity control
  • Using utilities:
  • DB2I & JCL • listdef & templates • terminate & restart
  • Data Utilities:
  • reorganisations • load & unload • check data & index • runstats & stospace
  • PART 2: Database recovery
  • • Internal physical structure of DB2 data objects:
  • table- and indexspaces, partitions
  • DB2 backup and recovery utilities & service aids:
  • using utilities & service aids to backup, recover & verify integrity of data
  • using utilities & service aids to print contents of DB2 data spaces, logs, etc.
  • PART 3: System restart
  • DB2 architecture
  • DB2 start-up, operations & shut-down:
  • commands to start, stop & control DB2 & attachments
  • automatic actions taken by DB2 during start-up & shut-down
  • DB2 logging and conditional & deferred restarts
  • 'Tidying-up' after conditional or deferred restart:
  • using utilities & service aids to recover & verify integrity of data
  • Problem handling:
  • Catalog & directory recovery
  • handling error situations with log, BSDS, data & index data sets
